Rosalba Carriera (1673-1757)
Portrait of a Gentleman
ca. 1730
Pastel on paper, laid down on canvas
61 x 45.7 cm (24 x 18 in)
Portrait of a Gentleman is a work of remarkable elegance and refinement, exemplifying Rosalba's artistry. The painting stands out for its luminous colours, delicate surface, and an overall sense of vibrancy.
Whilst the identity of the sitter remains uncertain, this does not detract from the portrait's captivating beauty, as noted by Oliver Tostmann, Susan More Hilles Curator of European Art at the Wadsworth.
Initially believed to depict the renowned art collector Pierre Crozat and later suggested to be Louis Armand II de Bourbon, Prince de Conti, neither identification has been confirmed. The gentleman is portrayed with his torso turned in profile whilst his head faces the viewer, engaging yet maintaining a subtle detachment. His elaborate shoulder-length wig, decorated damask justaucorps, and striking red vest adorned with gold embroidery and buttons indicate his high social standing and prestige.
